Synopsis: Growing up can be a bumpy road, and it's no exception for Riley, who is uprooted from her Midwest life when her father starts a new job in San Francisco. Like all of us, Riley is guided by her emotions - Joy (Amy Poehler), Fear (Bill Hader), Anger (Lewis Black), Disgust (Mindy Kaling) and Sadness (Phyllis Smith). The emotions live in Headquarters, the control center inside Riley's mind, where they help advise her through everyday life. As Riley and her emotions struggle to adjust to a new life in San Francisco, turmoil ensues in Headquarters. Although Joy, Riley's main and most important emotion, tries to keep things positive, the emotions conflict on how best to navigate a new city, house and school.
Disney Pixar have really rolled out an impressive portfolio of movies over the years, and Inside Out is sure to join the ranks of the top tier. The daring premise. The fantastic cast. The beautiful animation. The hilarious dialogue. All of these things contribute to create an outstanding film that's certainly one of my favourites from Pixar, as well as one of my favourites in general.
I really don't understand when people dismiss animated movies. They're not just "cartoons for kids". They can have fantastic characters, engaging plotlines and touch on all sorts of serious issues. Most of my favourite films are actually animated. Especially with animation techniques being as good as they are these days, you can almost fool yourself into thinking you're watching a live action film.
I feel like a lot of the ideas in Inside Out might actually go over a young child's head. Just the way they represented the different concepts such as why an annoying advertising jingle stays in your head, or why you forget things, or why you might suddenly start crying at a sad memory. Or the way they captured the bitterness of growing up. And the way our memories and experiences define us as people. It was pure genius.
The cast was impeccable. To be honest, I'd only heard of Amy Poehler and Mindy Kaling before the movie, but all of the voice actors suited their characters to a ridiculous degree. The voice of Sadness was particularly well cast; her slightly monotonous and at times lifeless voice really made me feel like I was almost drained of energy a bit.
Honestly, I wasn't prepared for the feels the movie induced. There were most definitely a couple of scenes where I was blinking back tears. But on the flip side, there were also a lot of moments where I was laughing out loud. Too many to count.
So if you have some time over the next month or so, I really really recommend that you go see this movie. It's definitely the sort of film that can be enjoyed by absolutely everyone, with jokes and themes to accommodate all ages.
